2005

DECEMBER
Hello Ladies!
Are you ready for MAWMR 2006?
As we wrap up 2005 and begin to gear up for 2006, there have been some changes. Several of our board members have decided to retire. Please join me in thanking them for their years of service and dedication. Since our former President, Sandie, is among the retiring board members, the job of President has fallen to me. Our new Vice President will be the seemingly tireless Carol.
I want to thank everyone who expressed an interest in joining the board, and/or helping at the 2006 rally. We are pleased to announce two new additions to the board. Please welcome Heather Van Keuren and Dawn Huber. These two great ladies will introduce themselves in this newsletter.
We are planning a wonderful rally for 2006. It will take place in Gettysburg June 23rd and 24th. Once again we will have an awesome parade, an array of vendors and activities, and of course our banquet. Don't miss this year's surprise guest speaker!
Ladies, we want to know if this will be your first rally. We will be giving the "Newbees" a ribbon to wear this year. If you see a Newbee at the rally, please help to make their first rally special. Show them the ropes, introduce yourselves and your friends. Make sure they know what our rally is all about...women from all walks of life, brought together by the love of riding.
Okay Ladies, get your reservations in soon. Rooms are blocked for MAWMR. Be sure to tell them you are a MAWMR participant when booking your rooms. Please see our website, www.mawmr.com, for hotel information.
Thank you ladies, I know 2005’s Rally raised over $22,000.00 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Every year we out do ourselves!
Besides now wearing the “hat” of VP, I am still handle Pre-Registration, Website and a variety of other duties. So I would appreciate your patience when inquiring via email or for the updates on our Website (www.mawmr.org). While we are on the subject of our website, I would like to inform everyone that from now on we will be sending out our Newsletters via our website. So please take a moment in January (for our 2006 Pre-registration and Bike Show Forms) and later in the Spring for our update on “What’s Lined Up” for our 2006 Rally.
As usual, don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions!
Workshops
I'd like to thank everyone who attended the workshops at MAWMR 2005.
We try to make everyone happy, but can't always succeed. Many of your surveys indicated that you wanted more information in the way of MC maintenance. Unfortunately in a one hour block, there isn't much that can be taught as far as maintenance. However, by popular demand, we will be bringing in someone to provide another workshop for MC maintenance.
PLEASE - if you'd be willing to present a workshop or have ideas for a workshop, please let me know. You can e-mail me directly at Barbara.E.Hook@ssa.gov or call me at 410-340-0846.
Apology
Through the grapevine, I heard that I offended some of the members of the Phenomenal Ladies because I admitted that I had difficulty saying the word Phenomenal. I am truly sorry if I did offend anyone; it definitely was not intentional. You ladies are a fantastic group that I have known for many years.
MAWMR - a Gay Rally, Straight Rally or a Women's Rally?
Has anyone heard that MAWMR is a gay rally and straight women don't want attend? The Executive Board has. MAWMR is not a rally for just gay women or just straight women. It is a rally for women, regardless of your race, creed, sexual preference, size, looks, etc.
Please take a look at the History section of the MAWMR website (MAWMR.com). According to the information posted, this all-women rally, originated by Nancy Warren, is for any woman who wants to come together with other women who ride, to learn from each other, laugh with each other, and ride with each other.
Yes, at times it does appear that there is a larger representation of one population than there are of others. MAWMR is a great place to learn diversity. Many of us have not had the opportunity to meet and mingle with women who are from different backgrounds. It's not many places that women can go and be themselves - girls being girls. Please, when you chat with someone about MAWMR and they say something that you know is not true, let them know the truth and extend an invitation to them to attend.
DAWN HUBER – NEW BOARD MEMBER
Who Am I?
Hi, my name is Dawn and I'm the newest member to the MAWMR board, not new to the rally though, I’ve been coming around for nine years. I have to say some rallies were better than others but I always make it a point to go and see old friends and try to make new ones. I try to encourage women to get out and ride, every chance I get. This year I'll be attending the rally as a board member and I hope to help make this year's rally a big success. I've been riding since I was big enough to sit on the gas tank. I started on a Yamaha Exciter and worked my way to a Dyna Low Rider. I've taken my Low Rider across the country over the years and I've been in all 48 states. I've been a member of the Twin Rose Lady Riders chapter of Women On Wheels for the last nine years and the last six the chapter director, also a member of CMA for the last eight years. What do I doing for a living? I work for a company called Eastern Drillers in the Accounts Receivable department. If you call the office, you'll hear my charming voice answering the phone, except for the 4 weeks that I am on vacation. During that time, I am usually on the road.
Enough about me! All you need to know is that I am a woman and I love to ride. So, where else would I be in June except in Gettysburg. If you want to meet me, you know where I'll be. Where will you be?
HEATHER VAN KEUREN – NEW BOARD MEMBER
Hi ladies!
My name is Heather Van Keuren and I am a new member of the MAWMR Executive Board and very excited to join a great team of ladies. I have attended eight rallies and I have been an active volunteer. I will be in charge of Vendors at the rally, and help with marketing and advertising in the coming months.
I learned how to ride eight years ago, but have been fascinated with motorcycles my whole life. I own two bikes, Yamaha V-Star Custom and a Yamaha FZ1 sport bike. Some days are for cruising, others are to ride fast and look good! I do a lot of long distance riding. In 2003 Dot, Joie, Norah (all past or present MAWMR Board members) and I went on a cross country trip on Rt. 50 from Ocean City, MD to San Francisco, CA. What a dream of a trip!!! We met so many wonderful people along the way; we were lucky enough to do it again this summer to Denver, CO for a big reunion.
When I am not riding, I work for Spectrum Printing as a sales representative. I am also the co-chairwoman for a charity event that benefits The Children’s Inn at NIH in Bethesda, MD. The 15 th Annual “Come Back to Bethesda” Car, Truck & Motorcycle Show and Family Day was held Saturday, October 1 st and we raised nearly $30,000 for the sick children at The Inn.
I would love any referrals for new vendors or suggestions you might have. I look forward to another exciting rally and meeting more women riders in June ’06!
